How to talk to your specific teen this week (without ruining the holiday)
You can feel it. The “Sunday Night Standoff” is looming. But if you’re tired of the regular interrogation over revision, it’s time to move from conflict to collaboration. We’ve put together something to help you turn down the heat and get the data you actually need.
The Sunday Night Ceasefire: Your New Secret Weapon
The WRAP Agreement (Weekly Review And Plan) is a formal “peace treaty” designed to facilitate a 30-minute strategy session between the “Project Manager” (you) and the “Lead Architect” (your teen).
This isn’t a court case; it’s a mutual session held on neutral territory – like the kitchen table or even the car – to set the stage for a successful week. By signing this agreement, both sides commit to a new way of working that respects biology and preserves your relationship.
What’s in the Contract?
The “No-Nag” Clause: Parents vow to ditch the “Interrogation Room” glare and sentences starting with “Why haven’t you…?”. Instead, you become the Chief Resource Officer, providing snacks, silence, and those all-important post-it notes.
The Reality Check: Teens acknowledge the “Planning Fallacy”—the brain glitch that makes a two-hour task look like 10 minutes. To counter this, they agree to a 1.5x Planning Buffer Tax to keep the schedule realistic.
Ownership: By physically moving units on The Study Buddy board, the teen takes ownership of their plan because “if I touch it, I own it”.
The Sacred Rule of Profit Time: This is the game-changer. If a task is planned for 50 minutes but finished – properly – within 35, those 15 minutes become Profit Time. This time is untouchable—it’s for scrolling or doing absolutely nothing, with no “just one more task” allowed.
