Where it all started

As Nathan’s son Jake approached his GCSEs, it became clear he wasn’t going to revise. Not because he was lazy — he had big dreams and real pride. But the gap between knowing he needed to revise and actually doing it felt impossible to bridge.

The family tried everything. Timetables. Leaving him to it. Gentle nudges. Firm conversations. Nothing stuck. And as the exams got closer, the atmosphere at home got worse.

The breakthrough

Applying project management thinking to GCSE revision

Nathan’s day job involved managing multi-million-pound website redevelopments. He used agile project management — breaking huge projects into manageable sprints, with clear backlogs and visible progress. He asked himself: what if we applied the same thinking to Jake’s revision?

How much is there to do?

Nathan broke Jake’s courses down into individual topics and subtopics – around 250 units in total. Suddenly, revision had a face! It was big, but it was knowable. And that changed everything.

Is there enough time?

With the task sized, a rough calculation showed it would be a stretch – but possible. That single realisation shifted Jake’s mindset from “I can’t do this” to “I can do this if I start now.”

When, and on whose terms?

The eureka moment: Jake helped plan his own revision week. His rugby match, his lie-ins, his FIFA afternoon – all marked out. Whatever was left was fair game for study. The more in control he felt, the more he engaged.
